Cotabato City (May 22, 2018) – In commemoration of the first year after the start of the Marawi siege, the Office of the Bangsamoro Youth Affairs of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (OBYA-ARMM) will be launching a book entitled ‘Tadman di ripatan’ on Wednesday, May 23.
Tadman di ripatan is a book featuring narrative essays, poems and photos reflecting the memories of Marawi residents and MSU students during and after the Marawi siege. The book’s title is derived from the Maranao phrase meaning ‘Remember, do not forget.’
The siege of Marawi City started on May 23 last year after local terrorist groups occupied major parts of the city for five months. It claimed lives of innocent residents, displaced thousands of families, and destroyed their homes, properties and livelihood. The impact of the siege can still be felt one year after it happened as residents remain displaced and still living in evacuation centers.
The book hopes to create a space for those affected by the siege to share their experiences and remind others the importance of its impact. It also seeks to expand the discussions on the aftermath of the siege.
The event, organized by OBYA-ARMM and the Communication and Media Studies Department of Mindanao State University (MSU)-Marawi, will be held at the Mamitua Saber Research Hall at the MSU-Marawi Campus.
During the event, a photo exhibit entitled: ‘Memories of Marawi Siege’ will also be opened to the public.
Officials of the ARMM government, students and members of school-based organizations at MSU, faculty of the Communication Studies Department-MSU, and the book’s writers and contributors are expected to be present during the event.
