DPWH-ARMM repairs and improves perilous road
Cotabato City – The Department of Public Works and Highways in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (DPWH-ARMM) is set to start working on the rehabilitation of a 10.66-meter road stretch of the Narciso Ramos Highway in the town of Matanog, Maguindanao following the approval of the P15.5-million project contract on Thursday.
Damage left by a series of heavy downpour make that portion of the national highway unsafe for passage, according to DPWH-ARMM Secretary Emil Sadain.
Sadain said the project would include the construction of a reinforced box culvert designed to prevent recurrence of similar damage, allowing huge volume of water to pass through. This is unlike the previous setup of the road. Funds will again come from the savings generated by the agency out of its 2012 allocation.
Constructions will be undertaken by BAMEC Developers, which secured the project contract after a negotiated bidding.
Sadain said the danger posed by the road’s condition prompted them to conduct a negotiated bidding, which is allowed under the law.
Sadain also alerted the district engineering office in the area to organize an Emergency Quick Response Team (EQRT) that would remain on call and respond to any emergency.
Maintenance and rehabilitation of national roads are normally undertaken by the national public works office. However in this case, the regional government took the initiative considering its urgency. (Bogs Sayson/BPIARMM)
