Assalamu alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu!
Today marks the 30th death anniversary of a hero who became the leading light in modern Philippine democracy.
Former senator Ninoy Aquino was the most prominent and most dynamic opposition leader of his time. His assassination three decades ago led to the downfall of a tyrannical ruler and restoration of democracy in the country.
The late senator was not only a proponent of non-violence to combat repressive regimes but also a champion of Moro rights.
On his privilege speech in 1968, he revealed the gruesome massacre of Muslim Filipino recruits who turned mutinous after discovering their real mission to infiltrate Sabah. This horrible event became infamously known as the Jabidah Massacre.
Jabidah massacre sparked the beginning of the formal struggle in the Southern Philippines. Filipino Muslims denounced this act of inhumanity and the world witnessed the longest running struggle in contemporary times.
As we commemorate Ninoy’s death, may this day find its mark and home in our hearts. May this be an opportunity for us to perpetuate our indispensable role in nation- building and as vanguards of transparency, peace and security and socio- economic reforms.
We in the autonomous regional government, its officials and staff, join one and all in the commemoration of a death that will hopefully keep us moving towards achieving peace and prosperity in Mindanao.
